Obligatory nice opening statement: Every artist, both the nominated and the victorious, should be proud of what they've accomplished, and we strongly believe in artists being recognized for their work.
Ok good talk.
The Grammys are a relic that we should retire now. Look, we're happy for the Foo Fighters. The album Medicine at Midnight is an absolute masterpiece. The fact that it won ALL of the Rock categories is suspect. Do the voters even listen to rock? Have they even heard of other rock bands? Or did they think, "oh Foo Fighters sounds familiar. Let's go with that one."?
Not to mention the fact they barely recognize rap artists, despite the fact rap is the most popular genre of music in the US. (Don't say "pop" is the most popular. Obviously. That's why it's called pop. But they play Nicki Minaj on pop stations. All rap can be pop. Not all pop can be rap. Ok back to the blog.)
The premise in and of itself is silly. The people who vote on the Grammys are the same people working in the industry. Think about the people your job recognizes for being a great employee. Now think about the people who are ACTUALLY great employees. Yeah, laughably different, huh? People in the industry giving themselves awards just feels masturbatory.
Music makers and music lovers aren't always the same people. The fact that Glass Animals, a band that's been around since 2010, was nominated for Best NEW Artist is embarrassing.
But one of the biggest problems was Louis CK winning. Seriously, Grammys, just release a statement saying you don't care about/believe women. It's less effort than an entire award.
And this is why we exclusively tune into the iHeartRadio Music Awards.
