I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL.
You're obviously familiar 2002 masterpiece from director M. Night Shyamalan featuring superstars Joaquin Phoenix, Abigail Breslin, Kieran Culkin, and that anti-Semitic guy who called a woman "sugar tits."
A pastor is widowed, loses his faith, hilarity ensues, the whole nine. BUT REALLY the beauty in the contradiction of a man who experiences such loss regaining his faith AFTER encountering aliens that technically would render everything his religion taught him obsolete??
THE USE OF WATER as an allusion to Baptism, but also finding the answer to all of his problems in what he thought were his children's problems? (Breslin's character annoyingly leaving water glasses everywhere; Kieran Culkin's asthma: THEIR ISSUES ARE THEIR SAVING GRACE)
A controlling man only finding peace when he stops trying to control. IT'S A GREAT FILM
Anyway, thank you for reading this very timely, relevant post.
