WATCH: Dave Grohl Tells the Story of 'Everlong'

Dave Grohl performed at Oates Song Fest 7908, a virtual concert to benefit Feeding America, and gave us this unique insight into the writing of the band's hit "Everlong." In the clip, we learn about his writing process, or lackthereof, as he reveals he can't actually read music and isn't what you'd describe as "trained." When he went to record the song as a demo, he didn't even have it finished, but he said the lyrics and the melody just "made sense." Then, he played it for Sonic Youth (because he was worried he accidentally ripped them off, given the chords' similarity to Sonic Youth's style) who asked him, "why is this a demo?"

His method of story telling is so compelling, that by the time he gets to playing the actual song, we're completely transfixed.
