I'm sure you've seen bands perform on shows like American Bandstand where the songs fade out when the band is "playing" live. Well, sure, it's not live at all. The bands are playing along with a recording of the songs, maybe without vocals so the singer just sings on top of that. It's called a track date.
Back in the 90s, Nirvana did one of these for the giant UK show Top of the Pops! Watch how they handled it.
