Because Nothing Says Family Bonding Like a Shared Beer

A new bill, HB1019, introduced by Rep. John M. Cabello, proposes changing Illinois' drinking laws. If passed, the bill would allow 18-year-olds to legally drink alcohol in the presence of a parent or guardian, even in licensed establishments.

This change would amend the Liquor Control Act of 1934, along with other related laws like the Video Gaming Act and the Innkeeper Protection Act.

The bill was pre-filed on December 17, 2024, had its first reading on January 9, 2025, and was then sent to the Rules Committee for review.

Supporters believe it could promote responsible drinking habits, while critics worry about underage drinking risks. The bill's future will depend on legislative debates and public opinion.
