Don't Do That: Laugh at Someone's Lost Custody

So I’m not even entirely sure whose fault this is but I had the universal experience where you try to use the self checkout, and the weight of the bagged item was off, so that cursed automated voice piped in, “please wait, help is on the way.” Of course the self checkout monitor lady comes over, and she starts punching in all those numbers. And it’s silent. And, this may come as a shock to you, but ya girl cannot handle silence I would rather chew razor blades, so I ask her how her day’s going. Without missing a beat she goes, “I lost custody of my kids this morning.” Now I’m not sure what the correct response is in that situation but MY response was to panic and say “oh, haha.” LIKE THAT. I LAUGHED. I LAUGHED AT THE CUSTOMER SERVICE LADY LOSING CUSTODY OF HER CHILDREN. So I guess just don’t ask people about their day unless you’re ready to laugh at someone’s lowest point and we recommend you Don't Do That.
