1803- France sold the United States all of the land from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. The massive real estate deal is known as the Louisiana Purchase. Cost: $15 million. About 4 cents an acre.
1939 - Lou Gehrig, the "Iron Horse", played his 2,130th consecutive game . . . and his last. He didn't miss a day of work for nearly 14 YEARS, but his body was too weakened by Lou Gehrig's Disease to keep going.
