Metallica's James Hetfield represented his band this past weekend at Joe Walsh's latest VetsAid livestream benefit with a solo acoustic version of Bob Seger's "Turn the Page."
"Turn the Page" was a hit for Seger on his 1973 album Back in '72 and Metallica famously recorded the song for its Garage Inc. covers LP.
Video from the event captured by a Hetfield fan account on Instagram shows Hetfield discussing the importance of the veterans cause and of reaching out and caring for "...[T]hose who serve our country and those who put themselves on the line — mentally, physically, spiritually. Not just them — first responders, military and the families along with them. Thank you so much for what you do and your sacrifices. Thanks. This is for you."
Hetfield proceeded to deliver a rendition of the song of which Seger would certainly approve.
The virtual benefit show Saturday was the fourth benefit for the organization launched by the Eagles guitarist Walsh in 2017.
VetsAid 2020 also featured music legends like Alice Cooper, Jon Bon Jovi, Steven Van Zandt, Willie Nelson and Eddie Vedder.
For Hetfield, the VetsAid benefit was his second virtual charity event in as many months.
Metallica raised more than $1.3 million during its 'Helping Hands' fundraiser in November. All proceeds from the event went toward the band's All Within My Hands Foundation, which has awarded millions in aid this year to COVID-19 relief, wildfire relief and educational causes.
