A scary moment paused Wednesday night’s Pirates-Cubs game at PNC Park after a fan fell more than 20 feet from the right field bleachers to the ground below.
The incident happened in the seventh inning, right after Andrew McCutchen’s two-run double gave the Pirates a 4-3 lead. The celebration quickly turned to concern as players urgently signaled to umpires and security that a fan had fallen onto the warning track.
The game was paused for about 10 minutes while emergency personnel rushed to the scene. The fan, an adult male, was placed on a backboard, loaded onto a medical cart, and taken to Allegheny General Hospital.
A graphic video circulating on social media shows the fan tumbling over the railing in what appears to be a 20-foot drop. McCutchen stood on second base visibly shaken, his hand on his head in disbelief. Cubs players took a knee while medics attended to the fan.
“Pittsburgh EMS, Pirates and Cubs training staff responded immediately,” the team shared in a statement posted to X.
The fan’s condition remains unknown, and further updates are pending.
One thing’s for sure: sports can be thrilling—but safety should never fall by the wayside.
